Oklahoma’s current healthcare landscape is quickly evolving. Some say not for the better. There is a shortage of qualified providers in many areas of the state. The decisions made over the next twelve months will swing the state’s healthcare in many different directions. Medicaid expansion could provide a boost to many struggling Oklahoma clinics. On the other hand, a plan that has not been announced by the Governor’s office, which will have major implications. This either will lead the state’s Medicaid program down a path of block grants or managed care. Block grants will see the state take a large lump sum of money from the federal government to do with as it sees fit, but not having to maintain all federal standards. Meaning that some procedures and provider specialties that are currently covered may not be in the future. Managed care would see the state contract with one private insurer for the Medicaid population, and have to be able to provide reasonable coverage to those members.

It is important for all Oklahomans to pay attention over the coming months. This will have an impact on not just the Medicaid population, but individuals covered by private insurance as well. If the high cost of uncompensated care continues in this state, it will drive health systems to close and monthly insurance premiums to rise.
